Police suspect arson in Everett apartment fire

EVERETT – Police on Wednesday were investigating a possible arson at an apartment on W. Casino Road.

Firefighters were called to the ground-level apartment about 7:15 a.m. When firefighters arrived a carpet was on fire. The fire was quickly doused and did not spread to other apartments.

Damage was estimated at $20,000. A child in an adjacent apartment was treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

Fire officials called police to assist with the investigation. The fire appeared to be intentionally set, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

Investigators questioned one man in connection with the fire.

Marysville: Coach accused of sexual assault

A cheerleading coach was arrested Tuesday after a 16-year-old girl told police the man sexually assaulted her during a lesson.

Christopher Thomas Powell, 25, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor.

Marysville investigators said Powell is a tumbling coach well-known in the cheerleading community. In January, he began giving private and group lessons to juveniles in Marysville and near Tacoma, according to a police affidavit filed Wednesday in Everett District Court.

The girl began taking lessons from Powell earlier this year. During one session, Powell allegedly kissed the girl and sexually assaulted her, according to the affidavit. The girl told investigators Powell later sent her a text message apologizing for his behavior.

Powell’s friend, who also was in the gym during the alleged assault, told police he didn’t see the incident, but Powell had told him he’d sexually assaulted the girl, according to court records.

Powell was being held in lieu of $5,000 bail.

Lynnwood: Massage license suspended

The professional license of a Lynnwood massage practitioner has been immediately suspended by the state Department of Health, which said he inappropriately touched a female patient.

The state agency suspended the massage license of Edward Kim, who cannot practice or be employed pending the outcome of a hearing into the allegations.

According to state documents, Kim engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with a patient while giving a massage.

Kim was notified of the administrative action on Wednesday. He has 10 days to request a prompt hearing and 20 days to respond to the action, called a statement of charges.

Sultan: Youths arrested in suspected trespass

Police arrested three juveniles after they were allegedly found inside Sultan Middle School after hours.

Officers arrived at the school about 4:40 p.m. Sunday after an alarm was set off. The officers heard voices in the gym and then found three middle school-aged children in a classroom, Sultan Police Chief Fred Walser said. The trio allegedly was in the process of disconnecting a DVD player, he said. They ran from the classroom but officers caught two of them just outside the school.

The suspects, two 12-year-old boys and a 14-year-old girl, also are being investigated in connection with burglaries at Sultan Elementary and High Schools, Walser said. Police have recovered all the property stolen from the school. Officers also are looking into the possibility that kids are responsible for a rash of other burglaries and car break-ins and vandalism to the schools in recent weeks, Walser said.

The suspects were released to their parents and the cases will be referred to Snohomish County juvenile prosecutors who will determine if and what charges will be filed against the kids.
