TULALIP — A woman who died in a one-car crash Tuesday on the Tulalip Reservation has been identified.
Meanwhile, the alleged driver was arrested.
Just before 7:40 a.m., Daisha Smith-Spencer was riding in the bed of a black Dodge pickup. The truck crashed into a utility pole near Lager Lane and Turk Drive, according to Tulalip Tribal Police.
Smith-Spencer was ejected from the truck, as was another person in the bed, according to police. She died at the scene. Smith-Spencer was 20.
The other passenger in the truck’s bed was reportedly taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger inside the truck was also treated for injuries.
Witnesses told police the truck had almost hit them at high speed before it crashed, according to a police report. The witnesses also noted there were two people in the back of the truck being tossed around like “ragdolls.”
A relative of one of the people in the truck told officers all of them had been drinking, according to the police report. The driver was found sitting on the porch of a home a few miles away.
Snohomish County detectives reportedly later found a large liquor bottle in the truck.
After she was taken to the hospital for treatment, police arrested the driver, a 17-year-old girl, for investigation of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and two counts of hit-and-run.
She was booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett but posted bail Wednesday. Conditions of release set by a judge include only leaving her home for court hearings, school, counseling, alcohol treatment or in the company of her parents.
