EVERETT – Republican congressional candidate Doug Roulstone is getting an early boost from the party leadership when U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., headlines a fund-raising event here Aug. 16.
Roulstone is trying to unseat Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., in Novemer 2006. Larsen was re-elected for a third time last year with more than 60 percent of the vote.
Roulstone is a businessman and former commanding officer of the USS Stennis. This is his first run for office, and he is awaiting formal endorsement from the state Republican Party.
“We think Mr. Roulstone has excellent credentials. We’d like to help him early and help him build financial support for his race,” said John McGovern, spokesman for Hastert.
Jeff Bjornstad, a spokesman for Larsen, said the visit may be an indicator the campaign is not doing well.
Roulstone’s event begins at noon in the Everett Events Center. Tickets begin at $200 a person. For $500, a person can also get a picture with Hastert.
