An article published Monday in The Herald and on HeraldNet explored the state’s efforts to expand broadband Internet access.
I’m online everyday at home and at work, so it’s hard to imagine life without high-speed access to the Web.
But a study released last week by Parks Associates found that nearly one in five U.S. households don’t have Internet access at all. The study summary points out:
“Age and education are factors in this divide. One-half of those who have never used e-mail are over 65, and 56 percent had no schooling beyond high school.”
Socioeconomic factors, such as income and fluency in English, have been cited in previous research about Internet usage.
Based on traffic patterns on HeraldNet, I can tell that most of our readers are using the Internet at work. They come mostly during business hours, Monday through Friday, though we don’t know how many of them only have Internet access at work.
