OLYMPIA — A Federal Way lawmaker’s proposal for an 18.5 percent tax on pornography has died before it ever got a hearing in the Washington Legislature.
State Rep. Mark Miloscia had suggested the tax, saying the revenue could be used to save a program that provides money to people unable to work because of physical or mental disabilities.
His plan would have taxed adult magazines and video, telephone services and paraphernalia.
Rep. Ross Hunter of Medina told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer he would have liked to give the bill a hearing. But Hunter also says he has an obligation to help Washington simplify its tax structure. And he foresaw problems with a bill that would put a different sales tax on goods based on content.
