PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police said today an officer fatally shot a man advancing on him with a knife.
The man shot Monday has not yet been named.
The police said they got a report that a man was harassing and threatening people near the Hoyt Arboretum in the city’s Washington Park. It’s an area crisscrossed by trails popular with parkgoers.
Police identified the officer as Jason Walters, a 13-year veteran.
Police said Walters confronted the bloody man in a bathroom but retreated as the man advanced on him. When the man continued to approach Walters, police say, the officer shot him.
The victim was described as white and in his 40s. An autopsy was planned today.
