PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland sixth-grader with special needs said he was pulled out of class and forced to mow the school lawn as punishment for falling asleep.
Kyron Sloan admits he’s sleepy in the mornings. He says a counselor at Alice Ott Middle School came up with the idea of having him push a mower.
Kyron’s mother, Kristi Sloan-Ceron told KATU her 11-year-old son is being punished for have a disability. She says he has ADD, Asperger’s and a medical condition that makes him sleepy.
She said, “No child should be out mowing the lawn when they’re supposed to be inside the classroom getting an education.”
The David Douglas School District said it couldn’t comment while the situation is under investigation.
