SEATTLE — A Washington state prison is expected to remain on lockdown for the next several days after a convicted murderer was shot dead trying to bust out in a stolen forklift as his partner held an unarmed guard hostage with a pair of scissors.
The Department of Corrections says the escape attempt at Clallam Bay Corrections Center on Wednesday was carefully planned by two high-profile inmates, convicted murderer Kevin Newland and Dominick Maldonado, who shot and injured seven people during a rampage at the Tacoma Mall in 2005.
Prison officials say Newland ignored verbal commands and a warning shot before a guard killed him.
Clallam County sheriff’s deputies were arriving Thursday to conduct a criminal investigation that could result in charges of escape or custodial assault against Maldonado.
