EVERETT — A new pilot program will encourage low-income families in Snohomish County to buy fresh produce from local farmers markets.
Fresh Bucks is a partnership of the county government, Anacortes-based nonprofit Food From Farms and the Washington State Farmers Market Association.
The program will work through the Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card accounts. Each account holder with $2 or more in benefits will become eligible for an EBT funds match of up to $10 per day. The money can be used for fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, mushrooms and produce-bearing plant starts.
Participating sites include the Everett markets on Friday and Sunday, as well as the main farmers markets in Marysville, Mukilteo and Port Susan.
This year’s program will last through the end of the season or until funds are exhausted.
Food From Farms is funding and coordinating the program. Donations can be made to www.foodfromfarms.org.
