PROSSER – The lower Yakima Valley is becoming known for its wine – a point that city officials are looking to capitalize on.
The City Council is considering modeling its new water tower after a wineglass. A nearly $2 million, 100-foot-tall wineglass.
The idea is that since Prosser needs a new water tower in north Prosser near Interstate 82 – the entryway to the city for many wine tourists – it might as well be something novel. Prosser sits about 45 miles southeast of Yakima.
“We have been discussing this with our engineers for quite some time,” Mayor Linda Lusk said. “A (water tower) can be somewhat of an eyesore. So we thought, ‘Gee, wouldn’t it be neat if we had something that was kind of an icon?’ “
The City Council and city business leaders seem excited by the idea, despite the extra $600,000 cost.
Lusk sees the tower as a potential tourist draw, brining people who “want their photo with the giant wineglass” and who may stay to tour the city’s numerous wineries.
