TACOMA — Backers of a recall petition to remove Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist from office say they won’t have the necessary signatures required to bring the proposal to the ballot.
The News Tribune reported the group admitted defeat Tuesday, two weeks before a deadline to submit 38,000 signatures. Campaign president Cheryl Iseberg says only about one-third of the required signatures were collected.
Isberg said the campaign fell short because they couldn’t raise enough money for the signature drive, which began last fall.
Linquist said in an email that “the overwhelming majority” of county residents support the prosecutor’s office.
The recall petition was based on the charge that Lindquist abused his authority by engaging in vindictive prosecution in a sex abuse case.
Isberg said backers plan to file another recall petition.
