PORT ANGELES — State health officials have closed beaches in two Washington counties to recreational shellfish harvesting because of potentially deadly levels of paralytic shellfish poison, or red tide.
The Peninsula Daily News said Clallam County beaches are closed from Dungeness Spit to Cape Flattery. The Health Department last week also closed a commercial geoduck harvesting area. Department officials say tests at some recreational harvesting spots found levels of PSP that could be fatal.
Closures also are in effect in Whatcom County.
The closures affect clams, oysters, mussels, scallops and other mollusks. Crab are not included.
The Health Department says recreational shellfish harvesters should phone 1-800-562-5632 or go to www.doh.wa.gov/ shellfishsafety.htm. before eating shellfish from anywhere in the state.
