Forum to review voting machines
EVERETT – Residents concerned that the electronic voting machines used in Snohomish County could be tampered with will discuss protections at a community forum Monday.
Panelists will explain why they want changes to give the public ownership of the source code of the voting system software, and demonstrations will be presented to show the value of a paper record of ballots.

Sen. Stevens will host 3 meetings
ARLINGTON – State Sen. Val Stevens, R-Arlington, will host three town hall meetings this month for residents and small business owners in the 39th Legislative District.

Candidate plans kickoff event
BOTHELL – Democratic candidate Mark Ericks will launch his campaign next week to succeed Rep. Jeanne Edwards, D-Bothell, in the 1st Legislative District.
Ericks, Bothell’s director of administrative services and former police chief, has been endorsed by Edwards for the seat
Ericks’ kickoff event will be 5-8 p.m. May 20 at the Monte Villa Farmhouse, 3300 Monte Villa Parkway in Bothell.
Also lining up to run for the seat are Democrat Jamie Gravelle, a Mountlake Terrace council member, and Republican Joshua Freed. The official filing period opens in July, and the primary election will be Sept. 14.

Sax faces hearing on contributions
OLYMPIA – A May 26 hearing will decide whether Snohomish County Councilman Jeff Sax violated state election rules by not filing timely reports of contributions, expenditures, debts and obligations in his 2001 campaign.
David Somers of Monroe lodged the complaint, accusing Sax of not reporting nearly $9,200 in contributions and $10,500 until weeks after a state-imposed deadline. The complaint also alleges that Sax failed to file timely reports on rent expenses and wage earnings paid through the campaign.
State Public Disclosure Commission investigators dismissed several other allegations made by Somers involving reporting of specific contributions.
Earl Tilly, commission chairman, will conduct the public hearing. Tilly can dismiss the allegations, can find them to be true and punish Sax with a fine of up to $500, or he can recommend the case be heard by the entire five-member commission at a later date.
Rep. Pearson sets up office
SEDRO-WOOLLEY – State Rep. Kirk Pearson, R-Monroe, has opened a 39th Legislative District office next door to Sedro-Woolley City Hall.
