WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla County coroner has found a final resting place for the unclaimed ashes of 11 veterans who died without known next-of-kin.
The Union-Bulletin reports that the remains have been transported to the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake, near Spokane. They include the ashes of World War I veteran Earl Foster, who died in 1952.
Coroner Richard Greenwood said it upset him to have the unclaimed remains of men who served their country sitting in the custody of the county. But he says he was honored to work with the cemetery and with the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in College Place to find a final resting place for the ashes.
A ceremony is planned for Sept. 12 to honor the men.
Walla Walla County still has 294 other unclaimed cremated remains dating to the 1940s.
