ARLINGTON — Dennis Kelly retired from the Everett Police Department only to find out he wasn’t done working.
Kelly, a longtime Arlington resident, recently accepted a volunteer job running Arlington Police Department’s citizen volunteer program.
In that role, Kelly plans to coordinate the efforts of people who want donate time to help keep Arlington safe, Police Chief Robert Sullenberger said.
First up, Kelly must recruit people willing to staff the front counter at the police department. Other jobs include statistical data collection, fingerprinting, clerical support and production of departmental publications.
Second, Kelly plans to establish a citizens academy to train people willing to do field work. These jobs might include checking on people’s homes while the residents are on vacation, closing the gates at the city cemetery and making sure the runways at the airport are clear.
At a recent city council meeting, Kelly told Mayor Margaret Larson that he’s happy to help out.
“We’re very pleased to have you on board,” Larson said.
Kelly brings more 27 years of experience, which includes teaching courses on topics such as avoiding drugs and administering first aid and CPR.
After retiring from Everett’s police force, Kelly volunteered for the Arlington School District and other community groups.
“We are very excited to have Dennis as our volunteer coordinator,” Sullenberger said. “The passion, energy, drive and initiative that Dennis possesses is a great fit for the department and the volunteer program. Over time, I see this volunteer program growing and providing a much needed service not only to the police department but to the Arlington community as well.”
People interested in becoming volunteer members of the Arlington police department are asked to contact Dennis Kelly at 360-403-3400.
