A retired pastor who was Everett’s First Presbyterian Church’s minister for 13 years will attend the church’s second annual homecoming tonight and preach Sunday morning.
The Rev. Edwin Coon will preach for the first time since his retirement in June 1996. The two-day event will start with a catered barbecue dinner, live music and dancing beginning at 5:30 p.m. today.
On Sunday, Coon will preach at the 10 a.m. worship service. A reception will follow.
“It’s exciting for our church,” church member Ralph Solberg said.
Coon began his 37-year ministry in New York and was a pastor in California before coming to Everett to lead First Presbyterian from 1983 to 1996.
Coon has been working on a book about the history of the church for the last 13 years. The book is scheduled to be published later this year.
The historic church, located on Rockefeller Avenue and Wall Street, is 113 years old.
Solberg said the homecoming will be a chance for past and present members to reunite. He expects about 150 people to attend the Saturday dinner. At least 200 are expected Sunday morning.
