AUBURN — A retired pastor plans to begin his 20th long-distance walk for charity on Tuesday morning.
Six months before his 80th birthday, Don Stevenson will begin a 3,000-mile trek from Auburn to Silver Spring, Maryland. He’s walking in support of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. The disease makes it difficult for people to walk even a few yards without an oxygen tank or medication.
He says he chose that charity after a fellow church member died recently from the disease and he also has a friend with the same illness.
Stevenson expects to arrive in Maryland by mid-September, after walking up to 30 miles a day with Sundays off. He’ll be traveling along U.S. 2 across the northern part of the United States.
