EVERETT – What are neighbors for?
A resident at the Bethany at Pacific Crest retirement center in Everett heard a smoke alarm in his apartment around 9 p.m. Thursday and went to check on his friend in the apartment next door.
He found him in his smoke-filled room.
The man pulled his elderly friend from his third-floor apartment. His friend was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to an Everett hospital.
“He was doing okay,” said Steve Parker, an Everett battalion chief.
The fire started on a stove, Parker said.
Five residents were displaced from their second- and third-story apartments because of smoke and water damage, Parker said.
The fire diverted traffic for more than 90 minutes on Pacific Avenue near the Snohomish County Courthouse.
