EVERETT — A home-invasion robbery in central Everett earlier this week apparently involved the use of a pit bull as a deadly weapon.
The robbers and the victim knew each other, according to court papers. The victim, 56, said two men kicked in his basement door on Feb. 13. At the time, one of the suspects had a girlfriend who was hanging out at the house in the area of 47th Street SE.
The 56-year-old tried to barricade himself in a bedroom. The two suspects reportedly forced open the bedroom door just “wide enough to put a pit bull into the room,” officer Lucas Dacy wrote in his report.
The dog bit the man on the arm, causing him to lose control of the door. The man claims he then was threatened with a handgun and a stun gun.
The suspects are both in their 30s. Police caught up with one of them a few hours later. He remains in the Snohomish County Jail. He claimed that he had been with the other suspect, but they parted ways about 15 minutes before the robbery, Dacy wrote. The man told police he does have a pit bull, but it was at home that day.
Everett’s animal control officers are aware of the reported attack, city spokeswoman Meghan Pembroke said Friday. The dog, named Sophie, was the subject of three previous animal control cases, including a bite in December.
The dog was not impounded during this week’s investigation.
The man also is scheduled to go to trial in April on charges of methamphetamine possession. That trial was supposed to happen this month, but it had to be pushed back because he was on the lam from the Department of Corrections until his recent arrest.
In the possession case, he allegedly had a baggie of meth with him when he was caught cheating a drug test at the local corrections office.
As of Friday, the second suspect had not been booked.
