MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A Federal Way roofer was struck and killed Monday when his flatbed truck rolled backward, dragging him for a short distance before it crashed into a parked car, police said.
Nick Garcia, 61, owner of Residential Roofing in Federal Way, was apparently trying to place a wooden block behind a tire of the truck when it rolled back, Mountlake Terrace Police Sgt. Craig McCaul said. Garcia died at the scene at about 9:30 a.m. in the 23900 block of 59th Place SW, McCaul said.
Garcia and a crew from Residential Roofing had removed an old roof from a home in the area and were getting ready to put a new roof on, said his son, Nick Garcia Jr.
The flatbed truck was loaded with material from the old roof, he said, and the truck was parked on a slight incline.
No one was inside the parked car the flatbed truck hit, McCaul said.
