EVERETT — Two runaway barges had to be towed after they were beached in the breakwater off the coast here Thursday morning.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office marine unit responded to reports of an unmanned barge floating in the channel between Hat and Camano islands. It turned out to be two barges, measuring about 60 by 300 feet, tied together.
A tug towed the two barges to safety. Shari Ireton, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said weather conditions, including strong winds and choppy waters, might have contributed to the barges getting loose.
