MONROE — A group of runners promoting world peace and tolerance is scheduled to pass through east Snohomish County on Monday.
The men and women are part of World Harmony Run, an international nonprofit with an office in New York that seeks to improve international friendship and understanding with a global torch relay.
The runners are on the second half of their trip, heading back to New York, where they started the relay run on April 15. “It is a special effort to make the world a better place,” said Atulya Berube, the U.S. coordinator.
The 10 runners are scheduled to arrive in Monroe on Highway 522 around 10:40 a.m. A public event is scheduled on City Hall, 806 W. Main St.
Then, they are set to travel east along U.S. 2. and are expected to arrive in Sultan about 12:20 p.m.
Another public event is set at that time in the Community Center, 319 Main St.
The group includes people from the United States, New Zealand, Russia and other countries, Berube said.
Runners take turns carrying a torch symbolizing harmony. The group covers about 100 miles each day.
This run has been held every two years since it was created in 1987 by the late Indian spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy. The route goes through Seattle, San Francisco and Oklahoma City, among other locations.
The organization also sponsors similar run in other parts of the world.
