Sailors ahoy: Boating seminars begin

EVERETT — The Everett Sail &Power Squadron is planning to offer several classes and free seminars starting next week.

The group is a member of the United States Power Squadrons — one of the oldest boating organizations in the nation. It’s dedicated to educating boaters, civic service and fellowship with other boaters.

Here are the seminars:

n May 21 — Knots, Bends and Hitches. Practice and learn how to tie knots essential to boating and when to use which knot. Non-boaters are welcome. Contact Lloyd Richmond at lerichmond6@comcast.net to register.

n May 30 — Boating on Rivers, Lakes and Locks. Learn about special navigation rules on rivers, river currents, how to read a river, using locks, and how to communicate with lock masters and bridge tenders. Contact Jim West at phnx789@msn.com to register.

n June 18 — Mastering the Rules of the Road. The rules on water are different than the ones on land. The seminar helps people understand who has right of way, how to avoid a collision, vessel responsibilities, restricted visibility, sound signals, lights and shapes on vessels, distress signals and more. The squadron also is beginning a basic boating class called “America’s Boating Course” starting July 15. Go to www.parks.wa.gov/boating/boatered/ for details about who must have the card.

It will be held in the conference room at Cabela’s at 9810 Quil Ceda Blvd., Tulalip. Cost is $50 for the first family member and $17 for each additional member of the household who is sharing the materials.
