Monroe Lions Club Scholarship awardees: The Monroe Lions Club awarded three scholarships to college-bound graduating seniors in the class of 2005: Carolyn Burns, Jessie Zomok and Ruth Medina.
Burns will attend Seattle Pacific University to study optometry. (The Lions club has made sight preservation one of its campaigns.) Zomok will attend Everett Community College to study firefighting. Medina will attend Cascadia Community College for her teaching certification. The Monroe Lions Club is proud of the students’ achievements and looks forward to their continued academic success.
Funds for the scholarship were raised by the club through sales of raffle tickets for a playhouse and garden shed built by the members of the club.
Officer honored: Monroe police officer Jim Atwood recently was honored by the Monroe School District for his three years of service at Monroe High School and Monroe Junior High School as a school resource officer, including his work directing traffic and setting teenagers back on the right path.
Atwood said it was one of the toughest jobs he has had in his 13 years of law enforcement. The school board gave him a certificate of appreciation, a pen and a pen holder.
Robert C. Byrd scholarships: State Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson recently announced the names of the 152 high school graduates in the class of 2005 selected as winners of the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship.
Approximately 16 of the top graduates from each of Washington’s nine congressional districts will receive a scholarship worth $1,500 per year for four years of study at college.
The federally funded scholarship is named for U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, a longtime senator from West Virginia who created the scholarship as a way to recognize and award exceptionally able students who show great promise of continued educational success in college and beyond.
