School FYI

The Edmonds School Board will soon be looking for a new member.

The board has received a letter of resignation from Doug Fair and is expected to accept it at a meeting tonight.

Fair, a lawyer, recently was appointed to a term as judge for Edmonds Municipal Court. His school board term expires in 2007.

“The judicial canons preclude me from holding a nonjudicial elected office,” Fair wrote.

Fair represents the Edmonds School Board’s first district, which encompasses the southwest corner of the school district.

The board must now set a timeline to replace him.

Tour new Lakewood school at open house

An open house to tour the newly completed addition at Lakewood Elementary School is set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 30.

The project includes the addition of a new wing containing four classrooms and the renovation and remodeling of the 1958 portion of the school’s main building.

The event will include self-guided tours and refreshments.

Marysville school officials getting design ideas

As the Marysville School District puts a $171 million bond measure before voters Sept. 20, it is looking at what one new and two replacement elementary schools might look like.

A design advisory team recently visited other districts, including neighboring Arlington, which opened Pioneer and Presidents elementary schools in recent years.

Still to be determined in Marysville is whether the existing Liberty and Cascade elementary schools would be one- or two-story campuses, said Superintendent Larry Nyland.

Both sites are long and narrow and access to utilities could be an issue.

Snohomish buys new scoreboard for stadium

Snohomish School Board members approved the purchase of a $48,789 scoreboard for Veterans Memorial Stadium, with one director abstaining.

The scoreboard, which includes space for displaying personalized messages and can show times in track events, will be paid for with leftover funds from a project to install synthetic turf at the stadium.

School board member Dennis Wick abstained from the vote, saying he would have preferred the scoreboard be paid for through fundraisers, reserving the money not used for the turf for other projects.

Educational materials available for public review

The public can view curricula being considered for teaching Everett middle and high school students who speak no English and are new to the district.

The materials can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 17 in the categorical programs office at the Education Services Center, 4730 Colby Ave.
