Everett woman to lead state PTA group
Everett resident Linda Hanson was elected president of the Washington State PTA at the group’s recent convention.
Hanson began her PTA involvement at James Monroe Elementary School in Everett. She most recently served as the state PTA leadership director.
As president, Hanson will represent the nonprofit association’s members, setting long-range goals for the association. The term lasts two years.
Lakewood to list 65 scholarships
The Lakewood Education Foundation will announce 65 scholarships and awards totaling $11,000 at its annual awards night at 6:30 p.m. May 31 at the Lakewood High School theater.
Fredda Smith, a lifelong resident of the Lakewood area and retired Lakewood School Board member, will be the guest speaker. The public is invited.
Two Lakewood Middle School students will receive academic achievement awards. Progressive scholarships recognizing significant high school achievements also will be presented.
The awards night includes a dessert auction to benefit the education foundation missions.
Monroe schools’ plant sales continue
A pair of plant sales in the Monroe School District will run through June 4.
Greenhouse hours at Monroe High School are 2 to 4 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Hours at Monroe Junior High School’s greenhouse are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. Both schools will be closed Memorial Day weekend.
At the high school, horticulture students sponsor the sale as part of Future Farmers of America activities. At the junior high, the school’s Greenthumbs Club and special-needs students put on the sale.
Two districts offer review of textbooks
* Any Marysville School District resident wanting to review two new proposed instructional materials – “Introduction to Business” and “Handwriting Without Tears” – can do so through June 5.
The materials will be available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in the Strawberry Room at district headquarters, 4220 80th St. NE.

* Any Snohomish School District resident wanting to review new high-school class materials can do so through Thursday.
Under review are materials for vocational agriculture science in ninth grade, supplemental texts for marketing and horticulture in 10th through 12th grade, and basic texts for 11th-grade social studies and 10th-grade health.
Parents and other community members can offer comment at a forum from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the Resource and Service Center, 1601 Ave. D. The materials are available for viewing through Thursday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the curriculum department.
