School FYI

“Spring sports are starting, so we’re going to have a good time with that. We have the WASL coming up, so we’re working really hard for that. In choir, right now, we’re swamped. We have the Lynnwood Jazz Festival and the Mount Hood Jazz Festival coming up, and we’re planning to take first place at both.”

The Marysville Arts and Technology High School has chosen a mascot and recently elected its first student government leaders.

The Marysville School District’s newest small high school, which started last fall with ninth and 10th graders, will be called the Penguins, which topped the Dragons and Pirates in a student vote.

“It’s not very pretentious,” said principal Bruce Saari. “It’s kind of fun.”

Student officers, who shared their observations with the Marysville School Board last week, include Brian Cian, president; Madison Voie, vice president; Bethany Hayes, secretary; and Ashley Gordon, treasurer.

Kids Create, Monroe School District’s creativity conference for kindergarten to seventh-grade students will be March 20. The annual event offers classes in art, science, music and video production, and a live theater performance.

The event is from 8:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Monroe High School, 17001 Tester Road. Students must bring a snack and a sack lunch. Registration is due March 3. Cost is $15 to $20. Parents and other Edmonds School District residents can learn more about state WASL exams during an information night at 7 p.m. March 3 at school district headquarters.

WASL, Washington Assessment of Student Learning, is given each spring to the state’s fourth-, seventh- and 10th-graders.

At the information night, people can learn about how the WASL compares to other assessments, what the test results mean and how they are used toward improving instruction.

The district office is just south of Edmonds Community College. The address is 20420 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

Lake Stevens School District wants to know what you want out of the next superintendent, who will replace Joe Ghaffari after 13 years of service.

The school board is holding a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to talk about the job and what the responsibilities will be. The meeting is at the district headquarters, 12309 22nd St. NE, in Lake Stevens.

The district is also conducting an online survey, asking people questions such as “How would you describe our district to someone new in the community?” and “What are the most critical issues facing our district today?” The district hopes to name a new superintendent by April 30.
