Students win third place at district science fair

Students from Arlington Christian School recently captured third place in the Association of Christian Schools International District science fair.

The annual science fair was at Fairview Christian School in Seattle.

Five of eight entries brought home superior ribbons, the highest award possible.

The winners by grade are:

Grade five, Craylise Jacobsen.

Grade six, Crissie MacNeill.

Grade eight, Martin Boyl-Davis and Monica Sykes.

Grade nine, Josh Lorenzen and Erin Lorenzen.

Grade 11, Michael Sweeney.

Grade 12, Hannah Lobban.

Cascade senior wins art honor and scholarship

Ilona Palamarchuk, a senior at Cascade High School in Everett, recently was named winner of the Everett Public School’s Superintendent Purchase Award and also winner of the Everett Public Schools Foundation art scholarship.

Superintendent Carol Whitehead selected Palamarchuk’s watercolor “Sunshine” to buy for the district.

For the art scholarship, Palamarchuk received $1,000 to study art after graduation.

She also received $200 from the foundation for the Superintendent’s Purchase Award.

Palamarchuk’s watercolor was one of many entries on display at the 10th annual High School Art Show sponsored by the Everett Public Schools Foundation. The winning art pieces are permanently displayed in the school district’s offices.

Palamarchuk plans to attend Cornish College of the Arts and to become a graphic designer.

Stanwood history team goes to nationals

Four of the seven Stanwood teams that recently competed in State History Day at the University of Washington won the right to advance to the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland in June.

The students created projects in a variety of categories based on the theme “Conflict and Compromise in History.”

Stanwood earned three first-place medals and a second-place medal.

The following Stanwood history team state winners, listed by their schools and grade are:

Stanwood High School:

Grade 12, Boyon Francuz and Ryan Knott, first place for their Web site project, “The Dayton Accords: A Compromise That Brought Tentative Peace to the Balkans.”

Breanne Harris, Casey Bridenbaugh and Tamara Jansen, first place for their exhibit, “The Vietnam Wall: Conflict and Compromise Heals a Nation.”

Meghan Heigler, second place for a historical paper, “Imperial Compromise: The Conflict to Uphold Arab Nationalism in the Aftermath of the Great War.”

Stanwood and Port Susan middle schools:

Grade eight: Madalyn Schei, Standwood Middle School, and Emily Najar, Port Susan Middle School, won first place for their exhibit, “The Kindertransport: Compromise Between Nations to Save Children from the Holocaust.”

Granite Falls student named to honor society

Phi Sigma Theta recently named Susan Tallis, of Granite Falls, a member of the national honor society at the University of Washington. Phi Sigma Theta is dedicated to recognizing and rewarding academic achievement in undergraduates at colleges and universities.

Kamiak junior wins first place in poetry contest

Rachel Wiegand, 17, a junior at Kamiak High School and a lifetime Mukilteo resident, recently won first place in the ­Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s poetry contest for her poem entitled “Mukilteo Beach.”

Weigand’s poem was selected from among 231 entries from the Puget Sound area.

Weigand also writes and performs her own music and she has performed at the Kirkland Uncorked Arts Festival and at El Corazon in downtown Seattle.

Wiegand’s parents are Lori Wiegand of Mukilteo and Mike Wiegand and Debby Arkell of Newcastle.

Snohomish graduate wins award for her art

Madeline Courtney, a graduate of Snohomish High School and a senior majoring in studio art at Kenyon College in Ohio, recently was awarded the Peterson Prize and the Wycoff A. Memorial Prize in Art at the honors day convocation at the college.

Courtney is the daughter of Herb and Teresa Courtney of Snohomish.

Lake Stevens schools name students of month

The Lake Stevens School Board recently named its students of the month for March.

The students were named at a recent school board meeting.
