STANWOOD — An assistant superintendent in the Stanwood School District will be doing double duty next year.
Michael Olson will retain some district-wide administrative responsibilities, but also will be principal at Port Susan Middle School for the 2009-10 school year.
The assignment is part of the district’s strategy to absorb budget cuts.
Olson will replace Principal Eldon Allen, who came out of retirement to fill the vacancy last August under a one-year contract.
Olson now oversees all secondary education programs for the school district. He will keep the assistant superintendent title, but his job will change to heading up district operations, such as food services, transportation and maintenance.
“As Port Susan principal, his primary focus will be to effectively lead the school while also maintaining some district-level responsibilities,” said Superintendent Jean Shumate, in a message to district residents.
Olson previously had been principal at Utsalady Elementary School on Camano Island and now oversees the district’s middle and high schools.
Like many local school districts, Stanwood faces a tight budget next fall because of state cuts and a declining enrollment.
“It was strictly a response to the reductions we need to make,” said Linda Littlefield, the district’s human resources director. “He actually volunteered. In fact, both of our assistant superintendents volunteered.”
