Student essays address male role models

The Washington State PTA Men’s Essay Contest winners included two Everett students. The contest invited students to reflect on influential men in their lives to highlight the positive effects of male role models.

Emily Jean, a second-grader from Silver Lake Elementary School, was the winner in the kindergarten–second grade division.

“A role model is someone you look up to and want to be like someday. My role model is my dad. He is really my step-dad, but I never knew my real dad … He was my dad because he wanted to be my dad, not because he had to be my dad,” Emily Jean wrote.

Justine Teoh, a seventh-grader from Gateway Middle School, won the sixth–eighth grade division. She spoke about her swimming coach and how he encouraged her to work hard.

“Coach Ken’s influences on me have changed my life — from the seemingly minute effect in politeness to the self-respect for my work and the lessons in dedication. He will always be a vital role model to me,” Justine wrote.

The girls also read their essays at the Washington State PTA convention in May. A video is at tinyurl.com/PTAessays.
