Four earn $2,500 scholarships from BECU
Four more Snohomish County high school graduates were each awarded a $2,500 BECU Foundation Scholarship for the 2013-14 school year in recognition of volunteer work.
Laurel Olden, a graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, was honored for a mission trip she took to Cambodia.
Jacqueline Causbie, of Holy Names Academy, volunteered for Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Child Life Department. She hopes to become a doctor and work with underprivileged groups.
Steven Parks, Cascade High School, hopes to design wells for remote villages or help create more efficient cooking stoves after a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.
Jordan Smith, Kamiak High School, led an English camp during a mission trip to Albania where her group worked with girls who had been rescued from the sex trade.
The local winners, which included students from Arlington and Snohomish reported earlier, were among 50 scholarship recipients selected from roughly 500 applications from BECU student members. A volunteer committee of local business, educational and nonprofit leaders based their selections on a combination of strong dedication to community service, leadership and academics.
Western graduate earns Sno-Isle scholarship
Annemarie Curd is the recipient of the 2013-14 Sno-Isle School Retirees Association $2,000 Scholarship. After earning her degree in literature at Western Washington University, Curd will spend the coming year earning her secondary teaching certificate with a minor in early language learning. She will be enrolled this fall at Western and hopes to be assigned to the Bellingham area for her practicum winter and spring quarters.
Her father is a member of Sno-Isle and teaches at Silverlake Elementary in Everett. Her mother is a teacher and currently helps homeless students attend school. Her brother will be applying for a Sno-Isle scholarship next year.
