How a garden grows
Discovery Elementary School on Sept. 26 held a Green Apple Day of Service. More than 80 volunteers, including 45 children, turned out to work on a final harvest at the school’s gardens.
“We got a lot done,” teacher Laurie James said. Volunteers moved 10 yards of wood chips and 20 yards of compost, harvested over 100 pounds of tomatoes and about 50 pounds of other vegetables. They built and prepared four large raised vegetable beds that are now ready for the fall harvest.
Green Apple Day is an international event that brings together parents, students and community members to improve schools through educational service projects.

‘Ninja’ speaker addresses CHS juniors
Professional speaker Hoan Do, who competed on television’s “American Ninja Warrior,” spoke to students at Cascade High School on Sept. 21. The school’s GEAR UP program (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) sponsored the visit.
“Hoan spoke to the class of 2017 about the power of positive thinking and the importance of ‘changing the radio station’ in your head. He walked students through self-talk exercises and shared personal experiences of having the right mindset to overcome obstacles and negativity,” said Sara Cameron, a GEAR UP coordinator. “He also shared the importance of just being silly.”
