Arlington High School

“We have just been snowed out. The last couple days of Thanksgiving vacation were extended. Everyone was excited about that. Right now, seniors are stressed out about their senior projects. For mine, I’m choreographing my own dance. I’ve never taken lessons. I’ve done it on my own.”

Student musical, auction to benefit flood victims

Fifth-grade students at Mountain Way Elementary School in Granite Falls, 702 N. Granite Ave., plan an art auction and concert Thursday to benefit the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross in its flood relief efforts.

The school’s 100 fifth-graders will perform a musical, “The Castaways,” about immigrant children left to fend for themselves in turn-of-the-century New York City.

The art auction includes more than 30 works by students, staff and local artists. The auction is to start at 6 p.m.; the musical at 7:30 p.m.

Sen. McAuliffe wants to get teens’ ideas

State Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell, will hold a Teen Town Hall to hear what local youth have to say about important issues in the 2007 legislative session.

Teens who live in the 1st District – including portions of Bothell, Mountlake Terrace, Brier, Maltby, the Martha Lake area and other neighborhoods – are invited to attend.

The event is to be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the North Creek Events Center on the campus shared by the University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community College, 18325 Campus Way NE, Bothell.

Parking fees will be waived.

In the past, McAuliffe said teens inspired her to sponsor legislation on the use of cell phones in schools and policies preventing harassment and bullying in schools.

For more details, call legislative assistant Jodie Fickett at 360-786-7600 or visit www. sdc.wa.gov/mcauliffe.htm.

Northshore board delays school boundary decision

The Northshore School Board will decide how to shift school boundaries at its Dec. 12 meeting.

Board members discussed five proposals at their meeting last week, but delayed action because of inclement weather so more people can attend and comment.

The meeting is set for 4 p.m. in the board room at 3330 Monte Villa Parkway, Bothell.

Growth in Snohomish County and shifting neighborhoods in King County are forcing the district that straddles both to rethink who goes where.

Board members last week ruled out two of five options under review because of the effect on junior high schools and cost concerns. Three others remain at estimated costs of $442,000 to $874,000.

More information about the options and possible phase-in measures are at www.nsd.org.

Changes would take effect in the fall of 2007.
