Stanwood High School

“We have a booth set up at lunch (to collect money for tsunami victims) and students come up and donate whatever they can. There is an overwhelming outreach of support. … The students know everybody counts, and they’re willing to give every penny to help.”

New Christian school district picks name

A new union of area Christian schools now has a name: North Sound Christian Schools.

Snohomish County Christian High School next fall will change its name to reflect the shift. It is the only high school in the system of five schools located between Lynnwood and north Seattle.

The school’s mascot and colors will be unchanged: the lions, and green, white and gold.

Voyager hosts parent night

Voyager Middle School will host an eighth-grade parent night beginning at 6:30 p.m. today in the school’s commons.

Parents can meet Mariner High School principal Brent Kline and learn about high school graduation requirements.

Jim Sparks, an eighth-grade science teacher, and Wes Bailey, Voyager’s assistant principal, will discuss eighth-grade expectations and student compacts.

A free dinner will be served, and there will be door prizes, babysitting services and Russian and Spanish translators available.

Volunteers sought to help design school site

Snohomish School District is taking volunteers on a first-come, first-served basis for a 60-person group to help design the site layout for the new high school and elementary school.

The community design workshop will be 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

A presentation will give information on the Cathcart Way building site and the educational goals for the buildings. Participants will help identify issues that affect the placement of the buildings, athletic fields and other site features.

Contract update helps staff serving in military

Teachers in Stanwood-Camano School District who are called into military service now can use paid-leave time typically used for long-term illnesses.

The change to the Stanwood-Camano Education Association contract also allows staff to donate sick-leave time more easily to co-workers.

Before, employees could only use the 15 days of military leave offered by the district with time beyond that being unpaid, Assistant Superintendent Eldon Allen said. The updates reflect changes to state law, he added.
