Granite Falls High School
“I think the school is improving. Prom is coming up May 7 at the Everett Events Center. The theme is starry night, I think.”
– Angela Carter

Heading to the Hall
Snohomish County Christian High School choir students will perform at legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City, among select students participating in a weeklong residency in May.
They will perform Gabriel Faure’s “Cantique de Jean Racine” and Felix Mendelssohn’s “Psalm 42, OP 42” – accompanied by a symphony and professional soloists under the direction of conductor James Melton – as part of the Masterworks Performance Concert Series.
Lunch prices go up
Everett Public School Board members voted recently to raise school meal prices for the first time in five years.
Prices go up 25 cents next fall, bringing the costs to $1 for elementary breakfast and $3.10 for adult lunch. Ala carte prices will increase 10 percent.
A look at I-728 spending
The Edmonds School Board recently received an update on how the district is spending Initiative 728 money.
The top expenditure – $2.56 million – has been to reduce class size ratios in elementary schools and selected middle and high schools. That represents about 49 percent of I-728 money.
The next-largest expense is $1.15 million in extra teacher training, about 22 percent.
Washington’s voters approved I-728 in 2000 to shift tax money into school improvement efforts.
Foundations need help
The South Whidbey Schools Foundation and Snohomish Education Foundation are seeking volunteers and donations.
In the last school year, the South Whidbey foundation granted nearly $9,000 to teachers in that district for innovative programs. The non-profit group also manages grants for such programs as Destination Imagination and Girls in Technology.
Fundraisers include an annual garden party and auction, to be held June 5 this year.

The Snohomish foundation recently awarded more than $35,000 in grants in that district, including $1,500 for shoes for needy students and $5,000 for a young student in need of a costly medical procedure.
