“Lately it’s been about the election. We’ve got a lot of people really into politics. So, naturally, some people are pretty upset and other people are probably happy.”

Exhibit highlights stories of immigrants

Evergreen Middle School’s multicultural club hosts “Life Encounters on Canvas: Portraits of Young Lives,” an exhibit by artist John Muhler featuring stories of 28 immigrant teens.

The exhibition is open 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. daily at the school, 7621 Beverly Lane in Everett, through mid-January. For information, call librarian Gregg Elder at 425-385-5708.

Penny Creek continues with interim principal

Louis Cenname will continue to serve as interim principal this year at Penny Creek Elementary School in Everett.

Cenname, who also has served as an interim principal in Mukilteo and Lake Washington schools, was hired under a state law that lets districts temporarily fill positions with retirees.

Former principal Rick Hart applied for a different job in the district over the summer and was accepted. He helped open the elementary school before switching positions.

Hart is now a director of curriculum and instruction – an added position at the central office. His salary was set at $102,351.

Granite to discuss attendance boundaries

Residents interested in elementary school boundaries can attend a 6:30 p.m. meeting Nov. 16 at Mountain Way Elementary School.

The Granite Falls School District will provide a first draft of the attendance areas.

The district is planning to turn Mountain Way and Monte Cristo schools into kindergarten through fifth-grade schools by next fall. Mountain Way now serves kindergarten through third grade; Monte Cristo, third through sixth grade.

Committees are now studying several issues, including staffing levels, the highly-capable and multi-age classroom programs, special education services, playground equipment and library needs.

More information is on the district’s Web site, www.gfalls.wednet.edu, or by calling Kathy Grant at 360-691-7717 for a hard copy. Questions and comments can be e-mailed to k5@gfalls.wednet.edu.

Mukilteo parents can review AIDS materials

Parents in the Mukilteo School District with students in grades five through 12 can preview the district’s HIV-AIDS teaching materials at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Lake Stickney Teaching and Learning Center, 1625 Madison Way north of Lynnwood.

State law requires that districts provide instruction on HIV and AIDS.

At the same meeting, parents can review the human growth and development teaching units for fourth through seventh grade and for ninth grade.
