The word from:
Jackson High School, Everett
“They’re having volunteer parents come in and moderating hallways to make sure we get to class on time. Not too many kids like it – we’re in high school, you know.”
– Robyn Fields, junior
Learn more about WASL, graduation
Monroe families can learn more about how state test scores are used to keep students on track for graduation at an informational meeting Thursday.
A new law that requires students graduating in 2008 and after to pass the Washington Assessment of Student Learning also will be a topic. Assistant Superintendent Fran Mester will lead the talk and include a brief history and perspective of the WASL.
The 7-8:30 p.m. event in the high school performing arts center, 17001 Tester Road, is the first of three information nights for families of children in the “middle years.” Other talks will be held Feb. 2 and March 22.
First writing festival inspires young authors
More than 80 Stanwood High School students attended the school’s first Young Authors Writing Conference last week.
The students applied to attend the on-campus conference, which featured visiting writers of several genres.
Speakers included poet and Everett Community College professor Bethany Reid; Patrick Jennings, author of several teen and children’s novels; crime thriller author and Island County Sheriff Mike Hawley; novelist and cookbook writer Bharti Kirchner; and Herald reporter Jennifer Warnick.
Students attended several writing workshops and had one-on-one time with authors in addition to being able to share their own work.
High school English department chairman Scott Loucks organized the program, which he says got rave reviews from students.
