Schools FYI

Four Snohomish County school districts – Arlington, Edmonds, Snohomish and Sultan – have reached tentative agreements for teacher contracts that will be voted on later this month.

The Mukilteo School District was meeting with representatives of its teachers’ union Monday.

The Mukilteo Education Association has set a meeting for Aug. 27 to ratify a contract or give its members a bargaining update, said Shirley Andrews, union president.

Robertson takes over Conway schools

Wayne Robertson’s retirement didn’t last long.

Robertson retired as superintendent of the 21,000-student Edmonds School District in July.

The Conway School Board hired him as the 475-student district’s interim superintendent Aug. 3.

Edmonds district sets back-to-school fair

The Edmonds School District’s annual back-to-school community fair is 1:30-5 p.m. today at Cedar Valley Community School, 19200 56th Ave. W in Lynnwood.

Fifty free haircuts will be given to students on a first-come, first-served basis. The Snohomish Health District will provide an on-site immunization clinic, but parents need to remember to bring their child’s immunization record.

Information will be available on Head Start enrollment, school registration, free school clothing, vision and hearing screening, school lunch programs, the Department of Social and Health Services and other local social services.

For more information, call Nancy Sutherland at 425-670-7311 ext. 1181, or Cedar Valley Community School at 425-670-7390.

Superintendent sets Marysville meeting

New Marysville School District Superintendent Larry Nyland has set a community meeting for 6 p.m. Wednesdayat the district office, 8220 80th St. NE.

Nyland, who became superintendent July 1, hopes to hear from residents who have not yet had a chance to give him input about the district.

Edmonds could alter early entrance

The Edmonds School District is studying whether to change the birthdate for younger students to enroll in kindergarten or first grade.

The cutoff is now Dec. 31 for kindergartners and first-graders.

The district is considering moving the cutoff date to Oct. 31, which would bring it more in line with other districts.

Any change would not take effect until the fall of 2005.

A study of fifth- through seventh-grade results from nationally standardized tests and the Washington Assessment of Student Learning found comparable scores between early entrants and their peers, particularly the older they get.

Post Middle School to add Spanish course

Students in the Arlington School District will have a chance to take a new course – conversational Spanish.

The Arlington School Board voted to add the class earlier this month on the recommendation of the district’s Curriculum Coordinating Committee.
