Lynnwood students recognized

Lynnwood High School students who helped rescue classmate Gatlena Lat were honored with a school board recognition award and a certificate of merit from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office at the Jan. 29 Edmonds School Board meeting.

School board President Susan Paine and Sheriff John Lovick honored Lynnwood students Jessica Anthony, Derek Bride, Justin Glanville, Alex Nguyen and Tyler Elliott.

The students joined Lynnwood resident Doug Clapper and another man in rescuing Lat on Jan. 15 after his car slid on a patch of ice and overturned, leaving him submerged in a ditch on Maple Road.

@3. Headline Briefs 14 no:St. Mary Magdalen competes in Seattle Prep speech tournament

At the annual Seattle Prep Speech Tournament Jan. 26, St. Mary Magdalen School’s finalists who placed in specific divisions were eighth-grader Annie Dang and seventh-graders Maddie Anderson and Chase Robinett.

Annie had a first place in editorial commentary, impromptu and was named Best Overall Performing Girl. Maddie placed first in dramatic reading and Chase had a third place in impromptu.

Other finalists were Zoe Jovanovich, Amanda Cox and Brent Haub. Participants from St. Mary Magdalen School in Everett included eighth-graders Andrea Sadowski and Anastasia Bernhard, seventh-graders Allison Corrigan and Luis Naranjo, and sixth-graders Layla Lothian, Keegan McAdam and Daniel Schwab.

All the students are part of the speech team, which is an elective for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders at St. Mary Magdalen School.

Three from Marysville School District join all-state chorus

Three students from the Marysville School District are among the fifth- and sixth-graders across the state chosen to participate in the sixth annual Washington Music Educators Association All-State Youth Honor Chorus.

They are Clare Cruz from Sunnyside Elementary School and Raven Paull and Megan Peffer from Totem Middle School.

Two students from county on Kenyon College merit list in Ohio

Madeline Courtney of Snohomish and Jazz Glastra of Stanwood have been named to the merit list at Kenyon College for the first semester.

To make the list at the private liberal arts college in Ohio, students must earn a 3.45 GPA or higher on a 4.0 grading scale.

Columbia College names dean’s list

Columbia College’s Dean’s List for August to December includes:

UW names dean’s list for fall

Students from in and around Snohomish County have been named to the Dean’s List at the University of Washington for fall quarter.

To qualify, a student must have completed at least 12 graded credits and have a GPA of at least 3.5 (out of 4).
