ARLINGTON – Given the chance to grab a bite of gridiron history, Seahawks fans are chomping at the bids.
A hot dog purchased during the third quarter of the Seattle Seahawks’ National Football Conference championship win on Sunday has drawn 40 bids on eBay’s online auction site.
There’s still plenty of time for folks who want this historic Super Dog.
Bids will be taken until 6:31 p.m. Feb. 2. You can see it at www.ebay.com. Search for the Seahawks hot dog. |
Top dog so far was a bid of $71. The Super Dog cost $5 at Qwest Field in Seattle.
Blame it on nostalgia or the giddy euphoria of tortured Seahawks fans. In the 30 years of the team’s existence, talk of the Super Bowl was more likely to mean a Tupperware party.
Stacey Houtary, 27, the Arlington woman who cooked up the hot-dog idea with two friends, had fun Wednesday watching the bids rise.
“I’m just shocked and surprised, really,” she said.
The bids are getting close to paying for one of the trio’s $87 upper-deck, end-zone tickets at Qwest Field. They plan to split the earnings.
The Super Dog legend is spreading.
People from Washington, D.C., Georgia, Idaho and Canada said on the eBay site that they had heard about the Super Dog in their local news.
Houtary said co-workers have started a pool to guess what the winning bid will be when the auction closes Feb. 2. She didn’t remember the highest bet, but one friend was counting on bids reaching $870.
At work, she’s getting new nicknames: Wiener Girl, Weenie Girl, the Hot Dog Lady.
She thought it was funny to hear she had made news across the continent.
“Now it’s getting so big, it’s unbelievable,” she said.
