SEATTLE — Officials at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center say 83 employees have been told their jobs are being eliminated. That represents 3 percent of the center’s work force.
Fred Hutchinson President Lee Hartwell said Wednesday the layoffs are due to the global economic downturn.
The Seattle center says the majority of its revenue comes from federal research grants and contracts, which so far have remained stable. But both philanthropic giving and investment income are significantly reduced.
