SEATTLE — Seattle fire investigators were going through a burned out garage when they discovered a body in the ashes.
Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen said six other people escaped safely from a house in south Seattle after they were alerted by a neighbor who spotted the fire about 8:20 p.m. Monday and called 911.
The garage was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived. The fire spread up the side of the house to the attic. Vander Houwen said about 50 firefighters responded to the scene.
The King County medical examiner’s office is identifying the victim while police and fire investigators look for the cause of the fire.
