SEATTLE — A 19-year-old man photographed wearing brass knuckles during a Mardi Gras fight pleaded guilty Monday to assault and rioting charges.
Aaron Slaughter pleaded guilty in King County Superior Court to second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of fourth-degree assault and one count of felony rioting.
He was photographed wearing brass knuckles during a fight last February, when Mardi Gras celebrations disintegrated into brawls and vandalism. More than 70 people were hurt in the riot; one was killed.
Cancer research fund-raiser: More than 17,500 people participated in the eighth annual Seattle version of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure, raising an estimated $1.2 million. Organizers had hoped for 25,000 participants and set a goal of $1.5 million for the five-kilometer event Sunday, one of a number of Komen benefit races nationwide. Registration virtually ceased after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, said C.J. Taylor, executive director of the Puget Sound chapter of the Komen Foundation.
Infant abandoned: A newborn girl was in good condition at a hospital Monday after she was found abandoned on the front porch of a Spokane home. Police were trying to locate the infant’s parents. The baby was found about 6:30 a.m., by a couple on their way to work, police said. Temperatures in Spokane were in the 50s at that hour. The baby’s temperature was about 96 degrees when she arrived at the hospital, police said.
