BURIEN — A 22-year-old man was shot twice by Seattle police Sunday after officers chased him from an armed robbery scene in south Seattle to an area of strip malls in Burien.
The man was listed in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center on Sunday night. His name was not released.
Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske told reporters at the scene of the shooting that the man fired at officers first and police had no choice.
The incident began about
1 p.m. when a man, wearing a mask and gloves and carrying a large caliber handgun, robbed a sandwich shop in south Seattle and robbed a citizen, police said.
He fled in a stolen car and police chased him until he drove into a dead end near First Avenue South in Burien, police said.
Kerlikowske said the man fled on foot, then fired at least one round at officers, who fired about five rounds in return. Police said the man was hit at least twice.
A police news hotline said the suspect was black, one officer was black and the other was Hispanic.
