SEATTLE — A whale observer thought he glimpsed a newborn orca in Puget Sound, and after a closer look saw two baby orcas.
In a cluster of about 80 orcas this week, Mark Sears said he spotted two healthy-looking babies. Video footage showed the orcas in Puget Sound with the Seattle skyline in the background.
"These are urban orcas, if there ever were," Sears told KING TV.
Experts say if the two calves live through the winter, their chances of survival will dramatically increase. Three of four calves born the past two years among the sound’s three orca pods have died.
