SEDRO-WOOLLEY — The police chief here said one of his officers has fatally shot an armed Mount Vernon man after a confrontation on Highway 20. No one else was injured.
Chief Doug Wood says the 32-year-old officer had pulled over a red Chevy Blazer this afternoon for erratic driving as it was headed north into Sedro-Woolley. But Wood said the driver pointed a handgun at the officer and drove off. The officer was following the Blazer when the driver pulled over again, this time on Highway 20. The chief said the driver got out of his vehicle and walked toward the officer, pulling out a handgun again. Wood said the officer then fired at least twice, killing the man.
Neither the dead man nor the officer was immediately identified late tonight. The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
Highway 20 was temporarily closed in the area tonight.
