50 years ago (1964)
Edith Bennett was changing from a student to a teacher in two weeks, teaching social studies at South Junior. The mother of five was a housewife until 1959 when she went to Everett Junior College and graduated from Western Washington State College.
New regulations that included fewer hours and dumping charges at the city dump at the foot of 36th Street, would likely go into effect in October. Public Works Commissioner Jerry Krekow said uniform garbage collection would probably start early next year.
25 years ago (1989)
Bubbles were a perennial fascination, and Erin Kumbera, 9, tried her hand at them recently while playing near 38th Street and Rucker Avenue. Using a large ward she made bubbles up to eight feet long for her friends to pop. It was expected to be a bubble-making kind of weekend, mostly sunny and warm.
The relationship between the Evergreen State Fair and the city of Monroe was one of “symbiosis” said fair manager Jim Quackenbush. There would never have been a fair without Monroe citizens. Earl Heifert, Percy Paul Cooley and Robert Follis were among those instrumental in nurturing the fair when the event began in 1941.
