50 years ago (1958)
Bob Heirman of Snohomish displayed a 7 1/2-pound mack-inaw trout he caught Friday in Lake Isabel on a fly rod and 2-pound test leader. The 31-inch trout battled for a solid hour before submitting. He also caught a pair of “small” 12-inchers.
Jack Larson set a new half-mile record in the Washington State Invitational track and field meet at Fort Lewis by running the 880 in 1:53.2 to place first in the open AAU division. The former Arlington ace, now a sensation as a sophomore at the University of Washington this spring, also tied his own mark set last year in the mile, 4:20 flat.
25 years ago (1983)
The Snohomish County Dental Society presented several Edmonds Community College dental assisting students with $100 scholarships. Among the winners were Valerie Moore of Marysville, Suzie Ashcraft of Snohomish, Bonnie Fant of Lynnwood and Charleen Dubbelar of Edmonds.
A truck carrying nearly a thousand cases of Canadian Club whiskey turned over just west of Stevens Pass. Fifteen workers were hired to clean up the mess. The job had none of the side benefits of free drinks one might imagine as King County sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Customs Service officials were on the scene at all times.
