50 years ago (1958)
Associated Sand and Gravel Co. was awarded a contract for surfacing and paving with asphalt 7.6 miles of new alignment of Highway 1-A between Getchell Road and Arlington. The Everett firm bid $339,240 for the state work, which when completed would carry 1-A on its new route from just north of Snohomish to Arlington.
In other road building news, workers were laying out a new road on Whidbey Island between Penn Cove and Bayview. In keeping with the theory of modern road engineers that the best route was the straightest route, four miles of existing road were being cut down to less than two.
25 years ago (1983)
Commander Richard Reinheimer of Everett was recently installed as administrative department head of Navy Reserve Patrol Squadron 69 at the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station at Oak Harbor, where he oversaw the work of 15 volunteer civilian and military workers.
Among the nine finalists in the State Grange baking contest during the state convention here was Margaret Ohlsen of Tualco Grange. In junior competition Mike Ohlsen of Tualco Junior Grange was first in his division and Gayle Edwards of Horseshoe Junior Grange was third in her class.
