Newest of Everett’s elementary schools, Emerson, would be dedicated the day after tomorrow. Designed by Botesch and Brown and built by Newland Construction, it was located in the growing Beverly Viewlands area southeast of Casino Corner on Highway 99. It was Everett’s 14th elementary and the seventh built since World War II.
Under construction and in the first stages of spanning the Snohomish River was a new bridge for a modernized section of State Highway 1 A. It would help take the load off the Avenue D bridge to the east.

The major front page headline today was “Everett eagerly awaits Navy’s decision.” For the past month the city had been swept by rumors that the Navy planned to build a carrier base on Puget Sound. Mayor Bill Moore thought Everett’s chances in landing the base were good. Also under consideration were Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Bremerton, Whidbey Island, Bellingham, Port Townsend and Port Angeles.
The old East Sunnyside School was torched yesterday as a training exercise for 50 firefighters from the Lake Stevens, Snohomish, Lake Roesiger, Arlington Heights and Getchell fire districts.
